Maths in Action

Year 5

Today in Year 5, we explored multiplication in a hands-on and highly visual way using Cuisenaire rods. The children used the coloured rods to build repeated groups, compare lengths and identify patterns, helping them to understand multiplication as more than just a written method. They represented multiplication facts using rods, then used the same models to find related division facts and factor pairs. Many children challenged themselves further by representing larger calculations using rods as tens or hundreds, discovering how multiplication links to place value. This practical approach supported all learners in seeing the structure of multiplication and deepening their reasoning skills.

Year 4

Efficient Addition

We have now challenged ourselves to find the most efficient way to subtract! Should we use column subtraction or a mental strategy? A lot of maths talk and being able to explain their reasoning.

Subtraction

We have been honing our column subtraction knowledge and using dienes to support our calculations.

Year 3

We’ve had so much fun this week developing our measuring skills! We've learned how to measure accurately using both centimetres and metres. We also practiced making estimates in both units of measurement and can now confidently convert between them.

We have been working very hard to develop our calculation skills, with a particular focus on bridging 100 by adding and subtracting in multiples of 10. To support our learning, we used manipulatives to help us visualize and understand the concepts more clearly.

Securing Number Bonds to 100

In our maths work we have been using our knowledge of number bonds to find multiples of 10 that total 100. We used the abacus and number line to help, knowing that each bead represents 10. Well done Year 3!

Year 2

Two-Digit Numbers

In Maths, Year 2 have been exploring two-digit numbers up to 100. They have been investigating the place value of each digit by creating their own numbers and using hands-on activities to show the value of the tens and ones. Learning was active, fun, and full of discovery!

Place Value

As part of our place value unit, Year 2 delved into two-digit numbers. The children explored the value of each digit in a hands-on way, using items from our playground to represent tens and ones, making learning both active and fun.

Year 1

Using Numicon to create numbers to 20.

One Less

The children have been looking at 1 less then a number, using conkers to support their learning.

Counting Using Manipulatives

We have been looking at counting amounts in maths using manipulatives.
